We are a family of 4 who live in the beautiful city of Launceston, Tasmania. Tasmania is an island located at the bottom of Australia, just like Hawaii, it’s just a little bit closer to Antarctica.
We love our island home, Tasmania is known for its fresh produce, delicious food and natural beauty. That said we do like to venture to places that are further away from Antarctica on occasion.
Karen – that’s me. I love food. I love to cook food, I love to eat food and I love to share food with friends and family. I may have a liking for coffee and chocolate that borders on addiction. I tried to do the whole paleo thing once and I discovered that life without coffee, chocolate and sugar was a life I just wasn’t ready to give up.
I also have another addiction, it’s to a whizz bang kitchen gadget called a Thermomix, which is kind of like a blender on steroids. I love to cook but unfortunately I also suffer from a short attention span. Pre-Thermomix I would often burn things as I would be attracted to something sparkly on the other side of the room. Post-Thermomix, I have a much higher success rate as I can set Thermie cooking and I can wander off to do something else and he cooks, stirs and does his stuff. Most of the recipes on here will be written to be made in the Thermomix, you can read more about this amazing kitchen gadget here.
I also love to travel, I really love the planning of the travel, almost as much as the actual traveling bit. As a family we have traveled in Australia, USA, Canada, Asia and New Zealand. Where to next is the big question!
Steve – my long suffering husband. He puts up with my travel planning obsession, but seems to enjoy experiencing what I plan. He is chief driver to my navigator. I tried driving on the right hand side of the road in Canada. Completely freaked me out, good thing I am an expert at reading maps (or setting the GPS).
Steve also suffers through my many cooking experiments. He is an exercise freak which comes in handy when he has to burn off the calories from being my chief food tester. I have not heard him complain once. Actually he probably did during my paleo stage because I was off the good stuff so no-one else got it either.
Zoe – our gorgeous 12 year old. Loves her veggies, hates meat and mostly likes to try my cooking. She loves our travel destinations but is not so keen on the flights to get there, which is unfortunate when you live on an island. She would also like to travel somewhere cold, like go snow-skiing or something. The rest of us want to go to the beach! Maybe one day, Zoe.
Jonas – our 10 year old sports freak. Loves his football and soccer. His favourite pastimes include kicking the football, watching football and playing football on the Playstation. Insert “soccer” and repeat that last sentence. He also loves planes and most of our family holidays have had to include an overnight stay at any airport hotel that has a view of the runway.
As a family we have no aspirations to travel the world full time, we love our home too much! We love to contribute to our local community and take time out a few times a year to get away as a family. Sometimes we do budget travel, occasionally we stay somewhere top-end. But mostly we are just an average Aussie family who want an awesome place to stay, family adventures, to make some awesome memories, and of course to experience some great food!
If you would like to get in touch you can email me at Karen @ familyfoodtravel.com (no spaces). Or you can find Family Food Travel on Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest. These are the only ones I can keep up with – otherwise I get too distracted….
